Review Sealife Sportdiver Underwater housing for iPhones (SL 400, iPhone 7 and up)

 If you are a snorkeler or recreational diver and own a iPhone 7 or up, you don't need a bulky & costly underwater Camera to make beautiful photo's and videos. The days that the housings for phones were not much more than a plastic bag with some clips are over.

The SL 400 is a real underwater housing for iPhones.

Sealife is a brand trusted by many, they have been making cameras and underwater housings for over 25 years now.

The SL 400 was released just before Christmas 2020 and comes in a solid carrying case, with zippers and space for accessories.      The neutrally buoyant case, weighs 1.5 lbs, and comes with a wrist band and a clip that you can attach to your BCD, and a removable red filter on the lens cover.  It is designed to mount on the Sealife frames so you can use it with light setups if you wish so.

Because of the easy interchangeable rubber bushings you can fit any iPhone from the 7 to the 12 Pro and Sealife says it will keep it updated as newer models come out. If you are using a regular protective case you'll have to remove it prior to putting your device in the SL 400.

Once you have your phone into the casing, you lock it down with a lever. A small suction pump allows you to bring it to the right pressure (with the free SportDiver app);

The pressure sensor in the case communicates with the app. An alarm will sound if there is a pressure leak. ( it has a secondary alarm for when water is detected in the case). There is a space to enter a moisture muncher, this will avoid fogging and removes the moisture.

The SL 400 is rated to 130 ft/ 40 m.

Instead of using mechanical push buttons, like other cases, the SL 400 is a powered case (2 AAA batteries) and uses Bluetooth to communicate with he phone itself. You download the free SportDiver app, and the app provides the screen and controls the camera. The app is easy to use and well done.

The large buttons are easy to use and give clear instructions, like making sure the auto-lock feature is disabled. The only negative point would be that you can not turn off the low-battery warning with the app.

All in all this is a valid solution for those that want to start with underwater photography without breaking the bank for a underwater camera. Once you have the right bushings in place, lubed the gasket, inserted the batteries and moisture muncher, and downloaded the app you only have to make sure you have the Bluetooth mode on your phone switched on and disable the auto-lock feature and you are good to go.

The Sealife SportDiver SL 400 is available at the best price at Leisurepro.
