Cayman Islands diving (9 top sites in Grand & Little Cayman)

 

The Cayman Islands are formed by Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

The total surface is 102 square miles with a population of 57.000 people.

George Town is the capital.



When to dive the Cayman Islands:

The least hot, and, rainy time of the year is from late November to mid-April.

Hurricanes are rae, the highest chance to be affected by Tropical storms and Hurricanes is from August to October.

Grand Cayman scuba diving 


Sunset reef Grand Cayman;


This 17 to 55 ft shallow reef is only 200 ft off of the pier at Sunset House Resort. Gorgonians, sponges and Hard Corals cover this reef. 

A 9 ft bronze statue of Amphitrite is a nice opportunity to take photos with a mermaid.

Moray Eels, Yellow Snapper, Black Groupers, are some of the fish to be seen at the Sunset Reef.


Trinity Caves Grand Cayman



3 long & wide tunnels start at the sand flats to open out on the reef wall, lots of natural light comes through the cracks in the ceilings.

Crabs & Lobster hide in the crevices, while Rays and Green Eels occupy the tunnels.


Ghost Mountain, Grand Cayman;


The top is at about 15 ft, while the bottom is at 200 ft, viz is often a bit clouded because of the nutrient-rich flow of water.

Great Corals, Barrel Sponges and Sea Plumes cover the rock.
Jacks, Wrasse and Chromis can be observed here. 


Kittiwake  Grand Cayman


This former submarine support ship is 250 ft long and sits in 60 ft of water, she was sunk in 2011. Many of the interior rooms can be penetrated. There is plenty of marine life among the corals that have grown on the wreck. Resident Groupers and Angelfish are found at the stern. The Kittiwake is located just off Seven Mile Beach Grand Cayman.


Stingray City Grand Cayman


This might be the best 12 ft dive anywhere. Southern Stingrays are the main attraction but you'll see Snappers, Jacks, Tangs & Sergeant Majors against the backdrop of beautiful coral heads.


Cali wreck


This 220 ft long steel schooner lies at only 20 to 30 ft, and is a mere 40 yards away from the coast.
This shalow wreck is a very easy dive for beginners, and even snorklers, with abundant tropical fish and corals to enjoy.

Oro verde


At a depth of 40 to 50 ft this 84 ft long steel cargo vessel, is a very popular night dive. The Oro Verde is located of the Seven Mile beach. 3 famous residents live here: George, a massive Jewfish, Kermit, a moray eel and Puff the Barracuda.

Captain Keith Tibbetts


This 330 ft long Russian brigadier lies in 56 ft of water about 200 yards from the shore.
This is ship was sunk in 1996 to create an artificial reef , 24 years later it is the home to thousands of fish. 

About 100 ft away from the wreck is a wall that goes down several thousand ft.


Little Cayman Scuba Diving:


Three Fathom wall Little Cayman


The maximum depth is 110 ft, but the wall starts at just 20 ft. Shools of smaller reef fish swim around the purple, re and yellow sponges in the shallower part. Sharks, Groupers, Turtles & Grunts are often seen at the wall. Eagle- and Stingrays can be seen on the sandy patches together with the Yellowhead Jawfish.


Randy's Gazebo Little Cayman


The Gazebo is actually an arch encrusted with Corals. Advanced divers can start at the Chimney, a narrow tunnel that starts at 40 ft and ends at 80 ft depth. Apart from the special geological features there is plenty of marine life to enjoy
