Eat a fish & save a reef ( 4 delicious lionfish recipes)

Lionfish is a beautiful, but destructive addition to the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and  Caribbean waters, this non-native species have no natural predators and destroy the eco-systems by devouring the local fish that are part of a healthy reef system. The lionfish is native to the indo-pacific.




When catching (usually with a speargun), you have to use caution, the sharp spikes on their back contain a non-lethal venom that can cause reactions in humans that vary from slight discomfort around the wound all the way up to nausea and excruciating pain. 

Since they are edible, it is a white meat fish, we gathered some delicious recipes so you can eat a fish and save a reef.


Spicy Lionfish Poppers

  • Lightly grill fillets in olive oil, with salt and pepper or your favorite spices to taste
  • Cook sliced bacon till crispy and chop into small pieces
  • Slice pickled cherry peppers in half and remove seeds
  • Stuff with shredded jack cheese, grilled fish, and bacon
  • Sprinkle the stuffed pepper with flour and dip it in pancake batter
  • Deep fry until golden brown

Lionfish Tacos

  • Season fish with “blackened” seasoning mix
  • Sear fillets in a hot pan coated with olive oil
  • Serve in warmed tortilla with shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, black beans, shredded cheese, and a touch of sour cream

Bahamian Style Pan Fried Lionfish

  • Coat fillets in flour, salt & pepper to taste
  • Mix up an island inspired marinade of lime juice, sour orange juice, and garlic
  • Drizzle over fillets
  • Pan fry in oil until golden brown
  • Serve over rice with lime wedge garnish

Seared Greek Style Lionfish

  • Prepare a marinade of garlic, lemon juice, fresh ground pepper, kosher salt, and oregano
  • Marinate filets for up to 24 hours in a sealed container in the fridge
  • Pan fry in hot skillet, sear until brown then flip to sear the other side
  • Crumble feta cheese on top as an extra zingy garnish
