Mares Puck Pro and Puck Pro Plus Wrist Computer Review

The Mares Puck Pro wrist computer is the entry level from Mares. With the Puck Pro they aim at the beginner and recreational divers. It comes in 7 colors, is a single button computer that offers functionality for a great low price. In this review we will compare it to the Puck Pro Plus.

One-button menu:

The big button makes for easy use, even when wearing gloves.

The menus are easy to navigate, press the button to scroll through the menus, hold to make adjustments in the menu of choice.

Functions & features:

  • In surface mode you can enter the logbook, see the remaining saturation after a dive, and use the dive planner. Once underwater the settings cannot be changed
  • In dive mode the Puck Pro will perform decompression calculations, and monitor depth, time and temperature. It does not have a depth alarm.
  • The backlight can be adjusted ( 1 to 10 seconds before fading), or you can set it to stay on until you press the button.
  • Rapid Ascent alarm, (30 ft/minute) and it will alert you if you miss a decompression stop.
  • Pre-dive, surface interval & No-fly time, it will always switch on in pre-dive mode, it starts calculating as soon as a depth of 4 ft is reached, the Puck Pro stops calculating once you surface. If you stay longer than 3 minutes at the surface the dive will be logged, if you re-submerge within 3 minutes the time at the surface will be calculated as part of the dive. After the dive it will show desaturation time, surface interval and No-fly time. You can adjust the Puck Pro manually for altitude diving ( up to 3700 ft)
  • You can switch the Puck Pro for Metric and Imperial settings and 12 or 24 Hr format.
  • Dive Planner, based on your desaturation time, surface interval it will calculate the dive time for your next dive when you enter the depth.
  • Dive log, it holds about 35 hours of dive time, you cannot delete old data, it will delete it by itself as you continue to add dive time.
  • Battery life/ changeability, life time of the battery will depend on the use of the backlight and the temperature of the water that you are diving in (Colder water means less battery life time). You should get 300 to 500 dives out of a battery. You can change the battery yourself. The battery compartment is separate from the rest , so it wont flood if the battery is not sealed properly. The backlight will stop working as soon as the Low Battery icon shows up, When the icon starts blinking the battery is so low it wont work for dives anymore and needs replacing first before using it again.
  • RGBM Algorithm, this is more conservative but ideal for beginners and recreational divers.
  • Mares offers a 2 year warranty
The USB PC Interface is an optional extra, which enables you to transfer dive data to your computer. The software is free and can downloaded from the Mares website.

When it comes to maintenance, you should have your computer serviced every 2 years, to check the seal, functions and calibration.

When it comes to the differences between the Puck Pro and the Puck Pro Plus, apart from cosmetic differences there is only one, the Plus comes with the Mares Blue Link (Blue Tooth), all the other functions are the same.

Conclusion:

The Mares Puck Pro  and the Mares Puck Pro Plus offer all you need from an entry level dive computer, easy to use one-button control, big screen, and a very low price.( Both are available at Leisurepro with 36 and 11% discount on their regular prices) With a 36% reduction in price the Mares Puck Pro is really ideal as an entry level computer that will serve you for years to come and makes for a good backup once your needs change due to extended training and more technical or advanced diving.

Comparable entry level computers are: Cressi LeonardoAqua Lung i100, and the Cressi Gioto which offer quite similar functions but cost a bit more than the Puck Pro.
