Consider these 4 features when shopping for a mask

Although it is one of the more simple pieces of dive equipment, a mask can make or break a dive, if it is not performing properly it will ruin your experience. When shopping for a mask you'll have the choice of a wide variety of features, styles & brands.

What to consider when you're in the market for a new mask:

  • Safety
  • Fit & comfort
  • Vision
  • Purge
When it comes to safety, just make sure the mask has a tempered glass lens, it will resist scratching and breaking when underwater.

A mask should fit you properly or you wont enjoy the dive a lot. Masks come in various sizes and formed in several different ways to fit the different facial forms. It is important to know that if you have facial hair, the skirts of the mask might not offer a complete seal.  The color of the skirts do make a difference, photographers prefer dark skirts because it reduces the flood of light to the eyes. If diving in warm waters you might prefer a neoprene strap, in cold waters, wearing a hood you'd be better of with a plastic or silicone strap.

Masks come in different shapes, depending on how many lenses they have, a single lens, or up to 4 lenses. The higher the profile (volume) of a mask, the greater the drag will be in the water. Masks with multiple lenses(side, and or bottom) increase your peripheral vision, but also allow more light in. Some of the two lens masks have teardrop shaped lenses to increase the field of view.  Choosing between single or multiple lenses is really a question of your personal preference.

Some maskes come with a purge valve in the nose pocket, although some people find them easier to use when clearing a flooded mask, you should bear in mind that if a bit of sand for example gets stuck in the purge valve water might enter continuously during your dive.

To keep your mask in good shape, make sure you wash it with fresh water after every dive.
